How to Clean the Grout in your Shower

Grout can be a challenge to clean, the porous nature of it allows mold to grow, dirt and soap scum can penetrate and is really hard to clean

As a cleaning professional I use this method because is the most efficient, it requires scrubbing but the result is very satisfying

1- Apply a powder cleaner to the grout

2- Scrub with a firm bristle brush

3- Wipe with a microfiber cloth

Here is the step by step with pictures:

Pouring powder cleaner in bowl

1- Pour powder cleaner in a small bowl.  Use Ajax , Comet or any brand that has bleach, they clean faster, disinfect and kill mold

Adding water to Ajax to form a paste

2- Add  water to form a paste, use a few drops at a time to form a thick paste, go slowly or it will be to watery

Brush with paste made with Ajax and water

3- Use a firm bristle brush to grab the paste and apply it to the grout

4- Scrub grout with the paste, this is the hard part, scrub until all mold and dirt comes off

5- Wipe all residue using a damp microfiber cloth. Fold it in four and use all sides, rinse and repeat as many times as necessary until all residue comes off, if you have a detachable shower head you can rinse the residue with it;  then dry and polish with a microfiber cloth

Enjoy the fantastic results! This is hard work, depending on how big is the area to clean, but here are some tips to keep it looking this great so you don’t have to scrub again

  • Wipe the wall with a mix of half water half white vinegar at least once a week, dry completely afterwards. Vinegar prevents mold and soap scum build up and leaves the tile shiny
  • Use microfiber cloths to clean everything, they are very absorbent and leave no lint behind
  • Always wear gloves when cleaning, specially when using vinegar and chlorine bleach or products that contain it
