How to Clean a White Kitchen Sink

Like a Professional

White kitchen sinks are beautiful but can get easily stained, they get gray marks from pots and pans and yellow stains when the porcelain finish starts fading. The method I use is really simple, fast and the results are amazing, I always receive lots of compliments from my clients when I clean this type of sink.

To clean a white kitchen sink or porcelain sink use a powder cleaner, also called scouring powder, like Ajax or Bar Keepers Friend. Scrub the entire area to remove all gray marks and food residue, rinse completely. If you see yellow stains, remove them using chlorine bleach. Rinse again and if you are satisfied, dry with a microfiber cloth. This takes just a few minutes and the results are amazing. See the step by step process with pictures below.

1- Scrub with a powder cleaner. Put on rubber gloves, get the sink wet, and apply powder all over the sink. Scrub using a non-scratching scouring pad, never use steel wool pads for your porcelain sink, it can damage the surface. There is no need to apply force to the scrubbing, be gentle, the powder will do the job for you. Scouring powder gently polishes the surface cleaning deeply and restoring the shine. Rinse with water and repeat the process if you still see gray marks.

2- Remove yellow spots with chlorine bleach. If you see yellow spots use chlorine bleach to remove them. Just apply a few drops over the stain using the sponge side of your pad, the stains disappear almost immediately but if they don’t, you can leave the bleach to act for 2 or 3 minutes.

3- Rinse and dry. Rinse with water and dry completely with a clean cloth. I recommend using microfiber cloths, they are very absorbent and leave no lint behind. Your sink will be bright and shiny.

2- Scrub the sink using a non-scratching scouring pad and just enough water to make the powder foam, add more powder as needed to cover the entire area. This will remove all the gray marks.

Enjoy the fantastic results! Your sink will not only look great but is also clean and disinfected. To keep it looking this great here are some tips:

  • Use this method as often as necessary, you can do it daily after washing the dishes, this will prevent the yellow stains to appear
  • If it is not possible to do it daily, do it at least once a week
  • Be careful when handling bleach and products that contain it, always wear gloves
  • Microfiber cloths are a must-have, they are very absorbent and leave no lint behind, always keep a couple of them handy to clean your kitchen
  • Use Magic Eraser for everyday cleaning but it won’t remove some of the gray marks
